Standard 6: Communication and Technology

Creates and maintains a classroom environment which supports and encourages learning.  Candidate performance demonstrating the following capabilities informs this standard.

  1. Create a comfortable, well-organized physical environment.
  2. Establish a classroom climate of openness, mutual respect, support, and inquiry.
  3. Work with students to manage their own behaviors and assume responsibility for their own learning.
  4. Use a variety of strategies to increase students’ desire and opportunity to learn.
  5. Create an environment in which students work both cooperatively and independently.

Artifacts:

1. To organize myself for a full day of classes I make sure that all materials are placed on the counter ready for being switched out in the short period between classes. I also make sure to have each box out that is needed for teaching that particular day.

I also strive to keep and organized scheduled in the beginning of the week in order to make sure that the week goes smoothly.

3. During a time where a particular student chose to act aggressively I asked the student to talk with me individually about how his actions reflecte the three school rules: safety, responsibility, and respectfulness. By pulling the student out attention I was able to have the student realize that his actions were hurting himself and others. They were also realizing that their actions reflected their productivity and work ethic.

5. In creating the second grade circle compositions, I had students create a set of rules before beginning their conversation. The particular IB Attitude of the month was "Cooperation" and therefore students discussed the meaning of the word and how they could apply it their works of art. The results were beautiful and the discussion helped students realize that artwork can be a collaborative process.
