Lesson Plans
ArtLab 2014
Sculpture is an important area of art an area that many students do not have the privilege of experiencing in the classroom. My partner Kevin and I chose to create a combined lesson that focused on the importance of units in sculpture. Our lesson incorporates the ideas of contemporary and abstract sculplture. It challenges the students understanding of three-dimensional works versus two-dimensional and asks the students to reflect on their end results by considering what makes up a finished piece of artwork.

The human population is increasing at a rate that far surpasses the environment, and therefore humans are creating more waste than the world can withstand. It is crucial that the students in today’s classrooms understand this impact and develop ways to lesson their environmental footprint. As many assume, scientists, ecologists, and environmentalists are those advocating for change, but artists can be advocates too. In fact, artists carry practices similar to their counterparts: creativity, drive, and resourcefulness. Using these techniques empowers artists to provoke environmental change, something that my partner Juliette and I hope to spark in our lessons.
