Art Lab is a unique opportunity that is provided to art education student by the University of Southern Maine to teach students in grades 4-8th. The pre-educators develop a lesson(s) to teach during a two hour period on the weekend of their choosing. The students have the opportunity to teach both older and younger students exposing them to a taste of both elementary and middle school students. Another part of the process is observation, which involves the preservice educator to take part in a peers lesson. Having these two opportunitites one is able to be exposed for the first time to working with children in a safe and nonjudgemental environment. The idea is to learn from one's mistakes and to work outside one's comfort zone in the beginning, without this experience I may not have known the preparation involved in creating lesson plans.
