Creative Color Wheel

For the Foundations of Art students at Freeport High School, the Creative Color Wheel was their first project exploring paint and color mixing. Their task was to take the three primary colors, (blue, red and yellow) and create all twelve colors on the color wheel. From each of those colors, they had to create three tints (adding white) and three shades (adding black) to create 84 different colors in all. They were to draw out a unique design, mapping out exactly where each of those 84 colors would go. The focus of this lesson was on painting technique, handling of new tools and materials and composition. This was a labor-intensive, but beautifully rainbow-like study on color mixing which prepared them well for the following two lessons.
