MUSIC MAPPING MURAL

In this two part lesson, students connected music and art by “Music Mapping.” We listened to a short song called Dance of the Amadlozi by South African musician Syd Kitchen. This is an upbeat, rhythmic song and some of the students described it as silly, funky, happy music. The students were asked to make distinct marks with black paint that showed the sounds and rhythm of

the three parts of the song. We called this “music mapping”

because the three sections of the painting showed the
beginning, middle and end of the music.
For the second lesson, students listened to a slow, instrumental song from one of Richard Wagner’s operas. They discussed how the music made them feel and then used colors that represented their emotions to fill their page. Some of the emotions they felt were calm, relaxed, tired, sad and happy.
