PORTRAIT OF A BIRD

In this lesson our goal was to create bird "portraits" that were vibrant in color and strong in line, almost like a stained glass window.

Students started with step-by-step drawing guides to draw cartoon-like birds. They then had to transform the bird and make it their own. Because these were bird "portraits" the students focused on the head of the bird. Using pencil, they created a simple outline drawing of the bird’s portrait. Students then used a new medium, black glue resist, which is simply black paint mixed with glue. The students traced their pencil outlines with the black glue and allowed it to dry. Before going to the color phase, students learned about warm and cool colors and they used these new color combinations to emphasize their bird against its background.
