Greek Mask Making

This 6th grade Greek theater unit coincided with a general education teacher's unit on the Greek Olympics. Students learned about the traditions of Greek theater and designed and made their own paper mache comic or tragic mask. After the mask making, students wrote a narrative for their masked character and preformed their roles in class.

Insect Tile Reliefs

This clay unit, Hand Building with Clay, was designed for 5th graders and it integrated environmental science, literacy, and library research into the art lessons. Students were first introduced to working with clay techniques and tools with a simple pinch pot project. After gaining the skills necessary to work with clay, students then began an insect tile relief project, which started with an insect report. The teacher collaborated with the school's librarian to achieve student success in the research of insects. Students completed the report and began their clay insect tiles.

Paste Paint Bookmaking

This lesson was designed to encourage playful exploration. Students used paste paint to experiment with pattern, texture and color. With the finished product, students made sketchbooks they could use for the remainder of the school year.

Architecture Throughout Time

Designed for 8th graders, Architecture Throughout Time is a complex set of lessons that integrates history, geometry, technology, and literacy into the art making process. Students begin by studying architecture throughout time, and combine three architectural styles to make a house design. Based off of their own drawings, the students made cardboard templates, which they used to construct their own unique clay house. After the house making, students wrote imaginative stories about the people who once lived in the house.

Pinch Pots

This fun and simple lesson helped 5th grade students become familiar with clay. Students learned about the Japanese art of Wabi Sabi and the Japanese traditional tea ceremony. When glazing the pinch pots, students furthered their knowledge of complimentary and analogouse colors.

Emotional Face Jugs

Emotional Face Jugs, a unit designed for 7th graders, integrated literacy and technology into the art making process. Students began the unit by developing several ideas for their face jugs in the form of drawings. Based on one of these drawings, students made an emotional face jug character. When students finished their clay work they wrote an imaginative story about their character.
