2013, BFA Art Show at Issac Dyer Gallery, Gorham, Maine.

Participating in the group BFA art show at Issac Dyer gallery gave me the opportunity to learn from fellow artists and the gallery owner, Debe Laughlin.  I learned a great deal about collaboration and professionalism while putting on this show. I arrived on time the day before the opening in order to set up my work and share ideas and suggestions with all the other artists. When hanging my paintings that day, I ended up arranging them in a straight horizontal line on the gallery wall, and when leaving that night I intuitively felt uneasy with the way that the birds were positioned. The next day I arrived early to the gallery and to my surprise found that Debe had arranged my work salon style on the gallery wall. Not having any prior experience hanging work in this fashion, I immediately asked Debe how she had managed to hang my work. The both of us agreed that salon style lifted the birds into flight. Having time to talk with Debe and share ideas I now feel confident and able to bring this new knowledge of collaboration and professionalism into the art classroom, where in the future I will have success in hanging student work and communicating with colleagues in a professional yet open minded fashion.

2013, Tutoring at USM, Portland Maine.

Volunteering our time, a fellow classmate Collin Zarnoch and I, taught an introductory class on the online portfolio site Digication. Before co-teaching together, Collin and I discussed ideas and collaborated on the best strategies for sharing our knowledge with the class. The both of us arrived to the tutoring session confident and on time, ready to guide students toward a better understanding of the online portfolio site. Preparing for this tutoring session took time and dedication, where I had to learn and relearn basic steps involved with setting up a Digication portfolio. Preparing for, and finally teaching this class, helped to further my knowledge of professionalism and collaboration with a fellow teacher and college students.

2013, Collaborating with Librarian, Cape Elizabeth, Maine.

During my internship at Cape Elizabeth Middle school I wrote and taught a 5th grade unit called Hand Building with Clay. One of the lessons in this unit required students to write a short insect report before creating an insect tile relief. I had some ideas of the questions I wanted to ask on the report and the resources I wanted students to use. However, I knew I needed more guidance and advice if I wanted to support student learning. This being the case, I decided to seek out the expertise of the schools Librarian, Amanda Kozaka. She and I met several times and revised and reviewed the questions to be included in the report. I took the class to the library where she and I co-taught and helped students research information. Collaborating with Amanda taught me the importance of reaching out to other colleagues and professionals within the school. I also learned that doing so helps to create full-bodied and enriched lesson plans.
