The goal of Envisioning Change is to visualize the impact of sea level rise in Portland, Maine and the Casco Bay region over a period of 200 years (1900-2100). The project is based on the principle that the arts can play a significant role in increasing environmental awareness, and can work in tandem with the sciences and technology to make visible something as incremental yet powerful as sea level change.

The project will engage artists, designers, community members and students in collecting and processing data, and will use a variety of analytic and expressive tools to chronicle and distribute information about the rising tides. Envisioning Change is being piloted through DIGITAL MAINE, a Digital Humanities initiative that is receiving support from the Maine Economic Improvement Fund to create a digital repository and distribution system for Maine-based research and creative work.
