Kelly Hrenko, Ph.D.
Associate Professor, Art Department
Art Education Program Coordinator, University of Southern Maine
Dr. Hrenko’s current scholarship is within the field of integrated arts and multimodal creative literacies. She uses her position as a teacher educator in the visual arts as a place where several intersections occur; between art and culture, community and school; and interdisciplinary education. She has previous experience working in Midwest Native American BIA schools, assisting k-12 teachers as they work to integrate the visual arts and native culture across the curriculum.
Dr. Hrenko has worked with local public k-12 schools, on various Wabanaki arts integration projects. The most recent project, “Many Hands”, was with Portland Public Schools and culminated in a public art and culture installation and the creation of curricula for state distribution (FMI on Many Hands see the menu option above).
Most currently, Dr. Hrenko is working with Side X Side, a local non profits arts organization and Portland Public Schools on a Federal Dept of Education arts integration grant (AEMDD). Dr. Hrenko is presently developing a university graduate program that merges interdisciplinary work with various processes of creativity and will serve educators and students from across content areas that wish to continue this work in their classrooms and schools.
