This is what’s known as an open-ended assignment; it still has structure, but there is more freedom to explore and be creative. The general guidelines are listed below; within these guidelines you are encouraged to think of different “right” answers. There isn’t just one!



Create a 2D design based upon something you saw in the exhibition at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art titled “PAST FUTURES: SCIENCE FICTION, SPACE TRAVEL AND POSTWAR ART OF THE AMERICAS. Think of the subthemes of the exhibition and the individual works of art that were grouped under these headings. Refer to the website

http://www.bowdoin.edu/~bcma/PastFutures/index.html to refresh yourself on the headings. Think of something in the show that inspired you, and use this as a point of departure for your design. For example, perhaps you liked Nancy Graves’ prints made from countless dots that represent unlimited points of data transmitted through devices, such as satellites and television, between outer space and earth. You could experiment with a pointillist technique to make your design, and make references to the earth or outer space, or simply create an expressive or decorative abstraction. Does this remind you of anything we did in class with points or dots?



The purpose of this assignment is to create a 2D design that demonstrates and effective use of some of the visual elements and principles presented in this class and responds to a theme creatively.



Go over the assignments in your portfolio to determine if there is an assignment that you would like to build upon in the final project. For example, perhaps your design will make use of cool warm contrast or maybe you will use black and white silhouettes. Or, you can do a variation on an assignment; perhaps silhouettes in color. Also, think back to the three categories of design (communication, decoration, expression) and decide which of three you would like to most work toward.



There are no restrictions regarding the materials you can use for this project. In short, you may use any materials you wish. If this is too broad, consider using materials such as paint, pen, cut paper on Bristol Board or other materials we have used in class. Think about the kinds of materials you like to work with; do you like to be detailed and precise as in pen drawings? Or, are you more comfortable with painting freely? Choose accordingly. 



The size should fit inside the portfolio.



(1) Demonstrated grasp of elements and principles of design such as use of value, texture, balance, composition and so on. NOTE: You don’t have to use all of the visual elements and principles that have been covered this semester, but the ones you choose to emphasize should be used effectively.
