Monday, February 9: Snow Day. NO CLASS

As stated in class last week, by now you should have done approximately 28 drawings for your ongoing outside assignment. Given the fact that we have now had 3 snow days, it is even more important than before to devote time and attention to your outside assignment. This will assure continuity in your drawing practice. When doing the outside assignment, the following points are important to remember and consider:

* This is a good opportunity to get more practice on what is being covered in class. For example, you could do a series of contour drawings of your object with each drawing taking between 5 and 20 minutes. Practice achieving a flowing (rather than scratchy) line; focus on variation of line (thin, thick, light, dark); apply what we have covered in class regarding proportions (block out the basic shape and use reference lines or points to establish proportion checks); try different media (what does a contour line look like in pen, charcoal, conte and so on?).

* Don't forget to experiment with placement on the page, and you can draw on different sizes of papers and different papers or even use alternate substrates for your drawings. For example, you could draw on cardboard or on cloth. Composition is extremely important. Avoid putting your object dead center on the picture plane. Activate the negative (white) spaces of the page.

* Set up a schedule for yourself; refer to the schedules we have followed in class or review the schedule set up by Nicolaides for his students. Your schedule can be whatever you want; it will give a structure to your time.

* Make a place to draw; this doesn't have to be an elaborate space with easel and so on; it can be a kitchen table or your bed! Just designate a particular place where you will draw. This helps focus the activity!

Please bring in between 7-10 new drawings from this assignment for Wednesday. These should be different than the ones you brought in last time.

Additionally, this is a good time to organize your portfolio. All of the assignments as done in class are listed under the assignments tab. Please organize your portfolio in chronological order and make sure your name and the dates are on the back of your drawings. Refer to the assignment list to check and see if you have everything.

Good luck and see you on Wednesday!
