Teaching Philosophy

"Instructions for living a life.

Pay attention.

Be astonished.

Tell about it."

-Mary Oliver

Creative Exploration:

Making art has always been a big part of my life. As I’ve grown as an artist, I’ve learned how much I love sharing the creative process with people of all ages. For me, art making is about creative exploration and expression above all else. The power of making and the problem-solving skills that art teaches empower students in so many different aspects of their education and their lives. I am constantly in awe of the creativity and ingenuity of children and how they interpret and expand upon the lessons that I teach them.

Authentic Learning Experiences:

With a BFA in Studio Art from UMaine and  BFA in Art Education from USM, I bring strong studio experience in a variety of media to the classroom. However, I believe in Discipline-Based Art Education and my minor in Art History has given me the background I need to teach across all four disciplines within the arts: aesthetics, art criticism, art history, and art production. DBAE promotes a well-rounded arts education and allows for assessment based on how much the student has learned, rather than just their final product. I also think it is important to give students authentic learning experiences whether it’s through visiting a museum, collaborating with the community on a social action project, or tieing in art with other school subjects through an interdisciplinary curriculum.

Artists as Risk Takers:

I believe in an art classroom that allows students to take risks.  There are no wrong answers in art and when students are made aware that their failures are simply a stepping stone in the creative process, it opens up the door for development in courage and self-esteem. To encourage this mindset, I find it useful to ask students to consider the process of their art and their intentions rather than envisioning a perfect end result. Through guided critique, students can then reflect on their surroundings, personal influences, and inspirations as motivators behind their learning process. I believe this enables a richer classroom experience for both the students and teacher. I want to create a space where my students feel comfortable taking risks with their art by encouraging them to embrace the creative process.

Lifelong Learning:

My own art teachers and mentors have had a very positive influence on my life and have fostered a love for learning that I hope to pass on to my future students. I want to be like those teachers. I hope that my passion for art motivates my students and I hope that my love for learning instills a desire for lifelong learning in those I teach.
