Classroom Management Philosophy

I believe an art room should be an inviting and comfortable space for all students.  An art room that can make accommodations for any kind of student need has different spaces for instruction, reflection, and spaces for students to work at their own pace.

I believe it is important to provide inspiration and stimulation for students by displaying artwork around the room. Work by famous artists, local artists, students, and the teacher should all be displayed. Student artwork should be displayed as much as possible, both within the school and the community. Books and resources should be available to students at all times in the classroom.

I believe it is necessary for all students to know their rules and responsibilities from the beginning. Not only does this ensure safety in the classroom but it also sets clear expectations for students to follow. It is important to discuss these rules on the first day of class and allow students to have input. Students should know why certain rules are in place and the importance of rules in maintaining their safety in the classroom. This way rules and regulations are viewed as a team effort and are followed with mutual respect.

One of the wonderful things about the art room is the freedom students can feel when entering an art class. Art is a communal activity and sometimes students can get carried away with noise level and behavior. It can be difficult to strike a balance. Consequences should be established and followed consistently.

I've learned that it is incredibly important to set goals for your students and to allow them to set goals for themselves. Students should know what is expected of them when they enter the classroom, both on a day-to-day and long term basis.

When it comes to daily procedures I think maintaining a level of enthusiasm for the work you are teaching is extremely important in motivating your students. I strive to create a positive, energetic space for students to work.

I believe students are capable of anything with proper motivation, support, and positive reinforcement from their teachers. In the art classroom, the greatest reward is the art itself. Students should learn to see their progress through hard work as something to be incredibly proud of. Positive and honest encouragement is invaluable.
